Local Storage with Sync Module

Local Storage is an optional feature that allows you to save clips directly to a USB drive (for Sync Module 2) or a microSD card (for Sync Module XR). For users with a Blink Subscription Plan or Trial, Clip Backup* is automatically enabled, saving a daily backup of your Cloud Storage clips once every 24 hours.

*Available for Mini, Mini 2, Outdoor 4, Wired Floodlight, Video Doorbell, Indoor and Outdoor (3rd Gen).

Legacy Blink devices such as XT, XT2, and Indoor (1st Gen) do not support Local Storage or Clip Backup. These cameras receive 7,200 seconds of cloud storage per Sync Module. When the storage limit is reached, the oldest clips are deleted to make room for new clips. Learn more about available storage options.

Note: Sync Module Core does not support Local Storage or Clip Backup.

Removable storage requirements

Sync Module XR

Note: We recommend using a Blink microSD card with Sync Module XR, available on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.

A microSD card is required for Local Storage and Clip Backup with Sync Module XR and must meet the following requirements:

  • A microSD card in a supported format (ExFAT recommended).
  • Minimum read/write speed of 10 Mbps.
  • Storage capacity between 1 GB and 256 GB.
  • At least 375 MB of free space.

Sync Module 2

Note: We recommend using a Blink USB drive with Sync Module 2, available on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.de.

A USB drive is required for Local Storage and Clip Backup with Sync Module 2 and must meet the following requirements:

  • A Type-A USB drive in a supported format (ExFAT recommended).
  • Storage capacity between 1 GB and 256 GB.
  • At least 375 MB of free space.

If necessary, the app will prompt you to reformat the USB drive or microSD card the first time you insert it. For information on reformatting your storage device, visit Troubleshooting Local Storage.

Setting up Local Storage

Note: To ensure proper Local Storage functionality, all cameras must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Sync Module.

Set up Local Storage for:

  • MicroSD cards: To insert, locate the microSD card slot on the edge of your Sync Module XR. Carefully insert the card with the label facing up until it clicks into place. To avoid damage, do not force the microSD card into the SD card slot. Once connected, you will receive a notification confirming that the microSD card has been inserted.

To remove the microSD card, gently push the card inward until it clicks and pops out slightly, then carefully pull it out.

  • USB drives: To insert, find the USB port on your Sync Module 2. Gently insert the drive into the USB port. Once connected, you will receive a notification confirming that the USB drive has been inserted.

To remove the USB drive from your Sync Module 2, first tap Local storage, then select Safely Eject USB Drive, and finally remove the drive once you see the "USB Drive Disconnected" message.

Verifying connectivity

To verify that the USB drive or microSD card is connected to the Sync Module:

  1. From the Home Screen, scroll to the bottom of the camera thumbnail list and tap the Sync Module status bar.
  2. Tap Local Storage.
  3. From the Local Storage screen, if “USB Drive Connected” or “MicroSD Card Connected” is displayed, it indicates that your removable storage device is connected. If a different message appears, visit Troubleshooting a USB drive or MicroSD card.

The Local Storage screen allows you to:

  • Verify that your USB drive or microSD card is properly connected to your Sync Module.
  • Monitor the available space on your USB drive or microSD card to avoid running out of storage.
  • Access information about recent Clip Backups, including whether the most recent backup was successful or failed (available with a Blink Subscription Plan).
